The Week in One Number
0.98. That's the concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) for Oura Gen 4's nocturnal resting heart rate against an ECG reference — mean absolute percentage error just 1.94%. Dial and colleagues (Physiological Reports, August 2025) tested five wearables across 536 nights in 13 healthy adults. Top-tier RHR is trustworthy. HRV is another story.
Three Moves
Wearable accuracy splits sharply by metric. Dial et al. (Physiological Reports, August 2025) found WHOOP 4.0 HRV hit CCC=0.94 but an 8.17% MAPE. Polar landed poor on RHR (CCC=0.86). Trust RHR trends more than nightly HRV numbers — and don't compare readings across devices.
Stretching gains come from tolerance, not tissue. A systematic review and meta-regression across 65 studies and 1,542 adults (mean age 26) tied ROM improvement more to increased maximum tolerable passive resistive torque than to fascicle length or stiffness change. Flexibility work largely retrains what you'll tolerate, not how long your muscle is.
Foam rolling beat the massage gun on tissue metrics. Szajkowski, Pasek and Cieślar (Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology, June 2025) randomized 60 volunteers. Foam rolling reduced tone (p=0.006) and stiffness (p<0.001). Percussive massage reached significance on neither (tone p=0.086). For measurable tissue change, the cheap roller outperformed.
One Failure Worth Studying
No retraction this week — so a mechanism corner on self-report versus HRV. A Sensors study (February 2026) tracked 39 adults for three months. Feeling "energized" carried a negative association with overnight HRV (64.1 vs comparison ms). Several other self-reported states showed no significant HRV link at all. Subjective readiness and autonomic recovery are not the same axis. Feeling great doesn't guarantee a recovered nervous system, and one shouldn't override the other.
